I believe that it was Reel Big Fish who put it best (in their song that wasn’t Sell Out):
Don’t start a band
No body wants to hear
Nobody understands
Don’t start a band
You’ll be so disappointed that it was nothing like you planned
So, it’s time for a stupid rant on my part. First let me start by saying that I love music. In fact, I love music so much that I have two degrees in it, but surprisingly (or not) I don’t work in the music industry or with anything to do with music. Second, I listen to a lot of music, and from a ton of different genres. Now, I know what you’re saying, “everyone says that”. Well, I’m not everyone, I can honestly talk to you about opera to country, rap to rock, etc. That’s not just surface about it, but pretty indepth, but hey, this is the internet, so I guess you don’t have to take my word for it. Third, I should admit my own biasis in advance: I love rock music. Plan and simple as that. In the end, that’s my favorite music and I have a natural preference it. So, I’m about to talk about rock…
Now, as a thirty-something-year-old male, I feel like I’ve seen a great deal change in the face of music. Over the past three decades, music has changed tremendously. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worst. Is it just me, or does the rock of this decade suck? Don’t get me wrong, therer has been some pretty good music written during this decade. But, when one of the biggest selling rock groups is Nickelback (and a large number of people hate them), some is wrong. It seems like the really progressive bands that are doing interesting things are being pushed to the side and instead we are left with the pre-fab semi-pop junk.
So, I reemphasize the thought from Reel Big Fish,”Don’t start a band.” If you do, no one will listen, and everyone will think your music sucks. If by chance you do make, the system will eat you up and spit you out. So, don’t do it…
